Is Culver’s an Affordable Gluten-Free Restaurant?

Great question right? I know for those with gluten intolerance, finding a restaurant that is entirely gluten free and affordable is like they just won the lottery lol, but some good news about Culver’s at least, they have many gluten-free options that are very affordable! Officially though, Culver’s is NOT a gluten-free restaurant because they have both gluten and gluten-free options and therefore cannot rule out contamination. They are considered a fast food restaurant with many gluten-free options though which gives more choices to those like me that have gluten intolerance.

Culver’s Menu – Gluten-Free Options
Culver’s menu consists of the basics of every fast food restaurant: Hamburgers, fries, chicken, seafood, salads, kid’s meals, soups and sweets.
- Hamburgers – Culver’s is known for their ButterBurgers – fresh beef, Wisconsin cheese, with toppings on a buttered bun. One important note: If you are ordering a ButterBurger or any other sandwich, you would need to tell them you need the gluten-free bun which is given to you in a separate bag and made by Rotella (check out the picture below which shows you how this bun comes packaged separately). Lots of toppings to choose from as well that are gluten free.
- Sides – Are Culver’s fries gluten-free? Yes! But they do say according to their website that they DO NOT have a dedicated fryer though so take that into account if you are extremely sensitive to gluten or are celiac. Other sides that are gluten-free include: Culver’s chili, chili cheddar fries, broccoli, coleslaw, side salads, applesauce, and a side of pickles.
- Chicken and Sandwiches – The grilled chicken sandwich, beef pot roast sandwich, grilled Reuben melt, and a grilled cheese are gluten-free. Again, you would need to order these with Rotella’s gluten-free bun to be considered gluten-free. Note: They have something called a Harvest Veggie Burger. This unfortunately is NOT gluten-free even with the gluten-free bun.
- Seafood and Salads – Unfortunately, no seafood that they offer is gluten free but you can order healthy food at Culver’s such as the chicken cashew salad, cranberry bacon bleu salad, or the garden fresco salad (with the garden fresco salad, you need to tell them no croutons). They have tons of dressings that are gluten free as well.
- Culver’s Kids’ Meals – The Kids’ meals consist of one of the following with your choice of fries or applesauce and a drink: ButterBurger with or without cheese or a grilled cheese (both would need to be on a Rotella’s gluten-free bun).
- Soups – George’s Chili, George’s Chili supreme, and broccoli cheese soup (do not use the saltine crackers that come with any of these in separate packaging).
- Culver’s Value Baskets – Choose any ButterBurger (or other sandwich I have listed above that is gluten-free) with a side (gluten-free ones are listed above as well) and a drink to save yourself some money! Lots of combinations to choose from.
- Frozen Custard – Fresh frozen custard that they make in batches daily, and comes in a multitude of flavors including what they call their Concrete Mixer which is basically a base of vanilla or chocolate custard and you get to throw whatever toppings you would like in there! They also have shakes, Culver’s root beer float, Fanta orange float, sundaes, and lastly, a create your own dish option!
- Is Culver’s custard gluten-free? Two things to mention about this, you can click on the link below to go to Culver’s nutrition and allergy guide which will show you what toppings are gluten-free and what ones aren’t. Please reference this list when adding toppings. Lastly, the custard is gluten-free, but it is not dairy-free and is made from milk so if you are dairy-free, this would not be a good option for you unfortunately.
Culver’s Nutrition and Allergen Guide
What I really like about their website is they have a nutrition and allergy interactive guide so you can choose an allergy and it will limit the menu having to do with this allergy and only provide you with the items you can eat. It makes it a lot easier to look through and you can check it out by clicking here.
Note: Due to the hamburgers/sandwiches coming with a regular bun, it won’t list them as an option for those avoiding gluten on this guide, but again, they do offer a gluten-free bun in its own packaging with sandwiches, so when you check this guide, look up the particular sandwich you are interested in and pick the gluten-free bun to tell for sure if the sandwich contains any other gluten.

Culver’s Menu Prices
Overall, the prices at Culver’s are very reasonable and comparable to most other fast-food chains. A sandwich of any kind ranges from $7-$10 with value baskets (sandwich, side and a drink) ranging from $10-$14 depending on the sandwich. Value baskets of course, seem to be the best bang for your buck since you get a side and a drink with the sandwich for only a few dollars more than just a sandwich. Also, I noticed that if you order a custard with it, it is a few dollars cheaper than if you were to buy one outright.
Culver’s Kids Meals are $6-$8 depending on the main choice in the meal plus you get the side, a drink and a custard which is definitely a perk.
Culver’s frozen custard comes in different sizes and types, but in general it costs between $4-$7 which is not that expensive. Again, as described above, they offer a few types of custard and shakes, but the majority of the options are set up so you can make your own custard and add whatever toppings you want (that are gluten free at least)!

So Many Gluten-Free Options at Culver’s
Well, I can’t actually say Culver’s is a gluten-free restaurant, but it’s pretty close to be honest. If only we could convince them to just use the gluten-free bun for ALL their sandwiches they would be almost there!
Overall, Culver’s is a great choice for those with gluten intolerance. Culver’s even mentions on their website to let them know ahead of time of any allergy or issue you may have so they can let the cooks know ahead of time so they can better prepare your order. They have reasonable prices and with all the options they have, Culver’s is a great choice for someone in your family with gluten intolerance.
